- It is possible for a song or tune to have so many versions (may be in same language or in different languages).
- One such master piece which has multiple versions (all of them are great) is our Maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s tune.
- First Version got released in the year 1982 for the Malayalam movie “Olangal” directed by the legendary director Balu Mahendra. Music by Ilaiyaraaja.The song is “Thumbi Vaa”.
- Second Version came out the same year for the Telugu Movie “Nireekshana” directed by Balu Mahendra. Music by Ilaiyaraaja and the song is “Aakasham enatidho”.
- Third Version came out one year later (1983) for the Tamil movie “Auto Raja” which has actor Vijayakanth in the lead role.
- Actually the movie “Auto Raja” has music composed by none other than Shankar Ganesh. The producer of the movie was impressed by the song “Thumbi Vaa” from Olangal.So he requested our Maestro Ilaiyaraaja to compose the same tune in Tamil and the final product is “ Sangathil Paadatha Kavidhai”
- And here comes the fourth version “Neer Veezhchi thee mootudhae” from the movie “Kanne Kalaimaane” which got released in the year 1988.Music by Ilaiyaraaja.
- And here is the final version “Monday Tho” from the movie “Aur Ek Prem Kahani” released in 1995.The movie is a remake of Kannada movie “Kokila” directed by Balu Mahendra. Music by Ilaiyaraaja …
- What about the Instrumental versions? You may ask… There are two available as far as I know.
- First one from Ilaiyaraaja sir’s Jaya TV concert “Andrum Indrum Endrum”.
- Second one from Ilaiyaraaja’s “music Journey -Live in Italy 2005” concert.
- Note : The tune came as a background track in the movie “Moondram Pirai” directed by Balu Mahendra with Raaja sir’s Humming.I think this must be Balu Mahendra Sir’s favourite tune.He has used it in four of his movies so far.
- See Sujatha and Swetha Mohan singing “Thumbi Vaa” from Olangal here and note Balu Mahendra sir’s reaction in the video.
- Download Lyrics for the songs “Sangathil Paadatha Kavithai” and “Neer Veezhchi Thee Mootudhae” here(available as JPG)…
All Download links are working now.If you experience any problem in downloading, Kindly send a request to us.
- Update : As you guys all know,Thumbi Vaa tune is back to the track.Yes Balki made it.Thanks to him.So,Here comes the final version “Gumsum Gum” from Paa..

The next version of this song as I understand is going to be in R Balki’s Paa starring Amitabh, Abhishek and Vidya Balan. Balki is an avowed fan of Raja sir…acknowledges Raja sir’s greatness and has popularized some of Raja sir’s best numbers in Cheeni Kum…

Hey. This is nice work. But I think the Tamil version came first coz I remember Raaja talking about this song in the jaya tv concert and he said Balu Mahendra after hearing the tamil version wanted to use it for Olangal. Olangal was the most popular one but Tamil version was the first one.
November 18th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
@Mahesh
I don’t think so..Olangal’s Thumbi Vaa came first..Hope I am right..Whatever it is, each version is a gem..
November 18th, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Thats true. Infact the most interesting one for me was the “Ek aur prem kahani” version. Its unbelievable that Raaja has used the same tune with different BGM’s for completely different situations…. And thanks to you, it also led to me to find out two other songs from the same film – the hindi version of “Kaatril Enthan Geetham” and “Pothi Vecha Malliga Mottu” !!!
On my earlier comment, I am certain the tamil version in Auto Raja came first (since Raaja himself said that). Also in Raaja.com both are mentioned as released in the same year – 1982.

@Mahesh: The correct information was, Ilayaraja played the tune for Thooral ninnu pocchu. Pandiarajan, who at that time an assistant to Bhagayaraj was assigned to collect/select the songs for that movie. Pandiarajan got very much impressed with the tune Okayed it. When Bhagayaraj heard it he thought it may not be suitable for the situation (or thought people may not accept it). Nevertheless he gave another gem for the situation “Bhoopalam Isaikkum..Poomagal Oorvalam”.
Ilayaraja didn’t wait and played the tune to Balu, he picked it up. Thats the story.
These things was told by Pandiarajan in a TV interview.

Hi
Excellent job.
November 23rd, 2009 at 11:18 pm
Gentlemen,
I myself was wondering why this song was so overused. However, I would like to point out that three of the above clips are not ‘versions’ but the same song. The olangal song, the telugu song and the associated tamil songsare exactly the same song. IR gave only one song…recorded only one song. The song was just dubbed into the other two languages. I know Nireekshana was remade into Telugu (but guess songs are dubbed) but not sure if the tamil version was a dub from Olangal or from Nireekshana.
Regards,
Bhanu

The Auto Raja (Tamil)version was originally in Director Mahendran’s movie “Azhagiya Kanne”. I do not know why the same version was repeated again in Auto Raja, which had other songs from it’s Kannada Version of the Same name. The music was by Rajan Nagendra in Kannada movie
December 11th, 2009 at 10:04 am
@Ganesan Sundararajan
I don’t think so…As far as i know, only “Auto Raja” (Tamil) has the song “Sangathil Paadatha”. It has music by Shankar Ganesh… Another Tamil version “Neer Veezchi” is from “Kanne Kalaimaane” movie..
December 12th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
